The colonial town
Trinidad is a UNESCO World Heritage site frozen around 1850 — cobblestones, pastel houses and the Plaza Mayor. Almost all lodging is casas particulares inside colonial homes; there are no large resorts in the town itself, which keeps it intimate and local.
Playa Ancón
A 4 km spit of Caribbean sand with a handful of hotels and reef diving offshore. Day-trippers from Trinidad fill it by noon; staying at the beach trades old-town charm for sand at your door.
Getting around
Trinidad sits between Cienfuegos and Sancti Spíritus. Taxis colectivos and horse rides into the Valle de los Ingenios — the old sugar valley, also UNESCO-listed — connect the area; the beach is a cheap taxi away.

A town built by sugar
Trinidad grew rich in the early 19th century as the heart of Cuba's sugar country, and when the industry collapsed the town was simply left as it was — which is why its cobbled streets, pastel mansions and the Plaza Mayor survive so completely that UNESCO lists the whole centre. That frozen prosperity is the reason to come: you sleep inside the history, in a colonial house that was built on the sugar boom.
Sleeping in the old town
There are no large resorts in Trinidad itself, and that is the point. Lodging is almost entirely casas particulares set inside the colonial homes — high ceilings, courtyards, rocking chairs on the porch — and staying in one puts you a short walk from the Plaza Mayor, the live music of the Casa de la Música steps, and the paladares tucked down the side streets. It is one of the most atmospheric places to sleep in all of Cuba.
The beach down the road
Twelve kilometres south, the Península de Ancón carries the finest white sand on Cuba's south coast — Playa Ancón, a calm Caribbean beach with reef diving offshore and a few hotels along it. Most visitors keep a casa in town and taxi out for the day; a few sleep at the beach itself, trading Trinidad's charm for sand at the door. Doing both — town by night, beach by day — is the classic Trinidad week.
The valley and the mountains
Trinidad sits between two more reasons to linger. Inland lies the Valle de los Ingenios, the UNESCO-listed valley of ruined sugar mills with the great Manaca-Iznaga tower; behind it rise the Escambray mountains and Topes de Collantes, a forest reserve of waterfalls and cool trails. Both are easy day trips, which makes Trinidad a base for beach, history and nature at once.
Music on the steps
Trinidad's nightlife has one address everyone finds: the broad stone staircase beside the Plaza Mayor that climbs to the Casa de la Música, where bands play son and salsa in the open air and the whole town seems to gather after dark. Down the hill, the Casa de la Trova keeps older, quieter Cuban song alive, and a cave-club, the Disco Ayala, throbs inside a hillside grotto above the town. It is one of the most effortless nights out in Cuba — free, outdoors, and a two-minute walk from almost any casa in the centre.
A day in the sugar valley
The classic day out from Trinidad runs into the Valle de los Ingenios, the UNESCO-listed valley of ruined 19th-century sugar estates just east of town. A slow tourist train and shared taxis carry visitors to the Manaca-Iznaga estate, where you can climb the 45-metre tower once used to watch over the enslaved workforce and look out across the old cane fields. Restored plantation houses, a few of them now serving lunch, dot the valley. It is history you can walk, half an hour from a casa in town, and it pairs the colonial streets with the story of what built them.
